Morning Stories
I had some unexpected free time yesterday because a meeting was cancelled during Gavin's preschool time, so I swung by the library to pick up a book and realized they were having Baby Storytime. Perfect timing! Riley was so cute, just looking around at all the other babies, and now I'm hoping to take her at least once or twice a month.
The storytime made me realize that I need to spend more time with Riley and books. We read to Gavin at least twice a day, and she's usually there with us listening, but we don't usually just give her books to play with....bad mommy! So, this morning, we just pulled out some books, and Gavin and Riley read together. So adorable!

Gavin reads!
I posted this video on Facebook last night, but I realize there are many blog readers that aren't on Facebook and I just had to share this. Jarrod and I find ourselves saying several times a day how big Gavin is getting. This video is yet another example. It makes me so proud, both as a mommy and a teacher! Sunshine
"You Are My Sunshine" has always been on the list of songs I sing to Gavin. When we did sleep training at 15 months and created more of a routine, it became a regular song. We'd read books, then one of us would rock him while we sang "You Are Our Sunshine" (we changed the words a little since we were both singing!) When Gavin moved to his twin bed, we still followed the same routine. Now, he's not interested in being rocked though. We sit together on his bed and read a few books, and then he lays right down on his pillow while I sing. Last night was no different - we read The Cat in the Hat and Mommy's Little Star before singing. First, I sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" with him. I love hearing him try to sing that with me. I was still laying right next to him, and he was being silly and smiling. I said, "What song should we sing next, Gav?" and he looked at me with this adorable little grin and said, "Sunshine!" It was so sweet! He's never requested that song before, but to me, it was like his way of telling me that that song is a special part of his bedtime routine. It brought tears to my eyes.
Jarrod and I always took turns doing the bedtime routine with Gavin, or we did it together. When I have a Tastefully Simple party, Jarrod's in charge. Since I haven't had a party in a while because of moving, I've kind of taken over the bedtime routine. I'm not sure how it happened; Daddy still comes in to kiss Gavin, but the reading and singing has been all me lately. And, I love it! It's such a special time for us - I try to lay there next to him and soak it all in. I know someday he won't need me to read and sing to him. So for now, I'll take all the snuggles, smiles, books, and songs I can get. I love you, Gav. You are our sunshine!

Gavin and Shirley = Best Pals
Earlier this week while I was cleaning, I heard Gavin talking to Shirley so peeked my head in to make sure he wasn't pulling her tail or anything along those lines (since that's his new favorite way to torture her). I loved what I saw! There he was, sitting right next to her on her bed, with a book in front of him. It looked like he was reading to Shirley! How sweet is he???

Gavin's favorite books
For both of my baby showers, the hosts requested a book for Gavin in place of a card. It was the greatest thing they could have done! I currently have all the paper-page books in a box in the garage so he doesn't rip them, and his bookshelf is filled with nearly 75 board books that he goes in and looks at all the time!
Even though he has so many books, every night before bed, when I tell him to pick out some books to read, he picks the same books! I try to pick something different, but while I'm in the middle of reading a new book, he always gets up to grab one of these and starts reading it himself.
This is what he calls his "Pooh" book. He really loves the page about the shapes, and searches for the circle immediately. There's also a page with different shoes for the different characters, and he loves that page.
His "Monny" book! (That's Barney in Gavin-ese) This book has taught him so much. The first page have a bunch of different farm animals. He finds the animals when I say them, and then tells me what they say. There is an aquarium page, which has taught him the word 'octopus' or 'ahhh-pus.' I really like the ABC page. There are animals hidden under each letter of the alphabet. He's learning the alphabet, and can find certain animals if I say the letter. Plus, he knows new animal names, such as 'newt' and ' yak.'
"Peek-a-boo!" Gavin loves the book Angie bought him. So much so that one of the pages no longer has the red ball flap, and the page with the curtains is about to be ripped out, too. He loves lift-the-flap books.
This is the book that Gavin calls "Up." Mama bought him this book because the photos of the dogs were so cute. He laughs at the silly dogs, and he knows when we get to the page with 'down' and 'up.' He loves shouting 'up!' after I say 'down.'
Gavin grabs this book off the shelf and says, 'Night Night!' This book was a gift from Heidi and it's so cute to read before bed. Each page says good morning to a certain animal and then Gavin opens the flap and we say good night to them. The last page is a little girl. When Gavin opens the flap, he put her blanket on her and says, 'night night!' and sometimes blows her a kiss.
I think Gavin likes this book because he gets to point to all the things he knows. There are many different theme pages. Food, colors, body parts, family members.... I started out pointing to the photos and saying the words. Now, I can just say most of the words and he points to them. :)
Gavin ~ Mama and Daddy are so proud of you. You're such a smart little boy and we love reading with you. We hope you continue to love books as much as you do now. XOXOXO!

Let Me Hold You Longer
Well, I always knew I was an emotional person, and I knew it's gotten worse since I had Gavin, but this is crazy! The "book man" came and put new books on display at work, and one caught my eye. Let Me Hold You Longer was sitting there, so I picked it up and couldn't even get through the first few pages without my eyes watering. I had to buy it, without even knowing how it ended. Just for Gavin.
I used to think the teachers that couldn't read Love You Forever without crying were exaggerating a bit...now I know exactly what they meant!
An excerpt from the book:
Long ago you came to me, a miracle of firsts:
First smiles and teeth and baby steps, a sunbeam on the burst.
But one day you will move away and leave to me your past,
And I will be left thinking of a lifetime of your lasts...
The last time that I held a bottle to your baby lips.
The last time that I lifted you and held you on my hip.
The light night when you woke up crying, needing to be walked.
When last you crawled up with your blanket, wanting to be rocked.
The last time when you ran to me, still small enough to hold.
The last time you said you'd marry me when you grew old.
