The 'ache' is real, my friends!

{Just a heads up....this post is long! It's filled with thoughts that have been on my mind for months now, so forgive my rambling.}

A few months back, I was standing in the play room, using the folding table to sort through clothes for a consignment sale.  Cleaning out the outgrown clothes always pulls at my heartstrings a bit because it means the kids are growing up, but this was different.  I suddenly had a stack of maternity clothes.  And I burst into tears.  Of course, Jarrod looked at me like I'm a crazy person, and I just couldn't put into words how I was feeling...so I let another blogger do it for me.  I grabbed the iPad and pulled this post up, and asked him to read it.  {Be warned, you will very likely need tissues....here I am reading it for probably the fourteenth time and I'm a puddle of tears once again.}

Here are a few of the parts that really touched me when I first read that post...

'I was unprepared for how completely transformative I found motherhood, how I loved even the mundane dailyness, how I found joy here.'

'It’s likely that I won’t ever be pregnant again, that I won’t carry a baby within me again, that I won’t ever give birth again. (Yes, I’m one of those awful women who loves pregnancy and giving birth.) When I think about not breastfeeding – one of the most real things I’ve ever done with this body – ever again, I catch my breath with longing.'

The Ache, right underneath my lungs, in the pit of my gut, the ache of what that means and the grief of moving on, of love, of knowing: No more babies. No more nursing quietly in the night. No more flour sack of milk-drunk baby bliss. No more gummy smiles. No more tiny diapers. No more baby clothes. No more crib. No more baby wearing. No more new baby smell. No more of the millions of moments that knit your heart so completely to another small soul.

But the Ache changes and grows as we move through our years, I imagine, perhaps in proportion to the life we live, the love we gather and give.

Our lives are changing.  At first it was the big milestones.... Riley decided she no longer would sleep in the crib, so a big girl bed was bought.  Riley insisted on wearing panties, so potty training began {and took a LONG six months...}  But lately, it's the little things that have been on my mind.  She's drinking her milk out of a regular cup.  She and Gavin shared a bed in the hotel earlier this month, not needing to sleep next to me.  I am able to take advantage of my Mother's Day gift of lunch and a spa appointment, keeping in the front of my mind the memories of being gone for just a couple short hours and how she screamed and cried, needing me to nurse her.  And I realize these focus mostly on Riley, because she is the 'baby' in the family, but do I have to mention the fact that Gavin is about to graduate from kindergarten, no longer needs me to walk him in to school so he feels more comfortable, and is doing chores around the house like sorting laundry and emptying the dishwasher?  I mean, seriously...how did we get here so fast???

Don't get me wrong...they're both still so little, and needy.  I still stand next to Gavin's bed at night and rub his back for him at his request.  We still need to help him brush his teeth or we'll be paying to have cavities filled left and right.  I still had to unbuckle my seatbelt and climb into the back seventeen times on the three hour drive to Kansas City because Riley had sneezed all over herself, was spilling her water bottle, or had dropped the book she was reading down the side of her car seat.  You know when she's not feeling well because she is constantly asking to be held and rocked.  {And I will rock her any time she asks!}

Any time I catch myself saying something about how I can't believe we don't have any babies in the house anymore, Jarrod always chimes in that we could always have another.  But that opens up a whole new can of worms.  Having an odd number where one child will always be 'left out' bothers me, a lot.  So, we'd need to have two more kids to balance that out....Jarrod says no way.  Of course, we have to factor in that kids are expensive, and we don't want to give up me staying home with the kids, so money always goes through my mind.  I think about things that we're able to do now that Riley's getting bigger and think how different things would be if we added another baby to the mix.  And I love this stage that we're in.  I love that we can have family dates to the movies, we can think about planning trips {like to Disney!}, and we can think about actually having a date night every now and then {not that we have...but it is a possibility!  High maintenance Riley didn't make that a possibility for a couple years.}

I think about our little family, and it feels perfect.  It feels complete and wonderful.  But there's still something inside me that has a hard time selling that swing and pack 'n play that is still in the attic!  Reading this blog post about 'the ache' made me realize that these tears I cry when I think about not having another baby aren't necessarily because I want another baby, they're just because that chapter of my life is closing, and it was such an amazing chapter.  I always wanted to be a mom, but I never ever realized how much it would effect me.  I never knew how seeing the world through your own child's eyes would change the way you view everything.  I never wanted to breastfeed, and I spent 28 months nursing a baby.  I grew up knowing in my heart I wanted a teaching career, and I walked away from that career for my babies with no regrets.  Motherhood changed my life dramatically, and I'm so thankful for that.

I've learned to never say never.  I'm sure my parents said they'd never have more kids after Megan, and 12 years later that changed.  I said I'd never move away from Ohio.  We all know how that turned out.  So I won't say we'll never have another baby.  But I'm pretty confident that the Pate family will always be a perfect family of four....and I'm so looking forward to all the memories we'll make as we go through new stages of life together, even if I am still living with the ache.

Another reason you should blog!

I tell lots of people they should blog.  The reasons I blog are pretty well known...it started as a way to keep our families involved in our lives after having Gavin and when we moved away, but it evolved into a way for me to capture our everyday lives and document all the little things we do so that one day we could look back and reminisce.  Well, check out these pictures!

Can I just tell you how in love I am?  I used Blog2Print and turned my blog into a book!  It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, but never did...until Rosi gave me money for Christmas and told me to use it for something I wanted, not the kids.  I knew exactly what I wanted.  This is just the first year of my blog, and it's 221 pages!  Every post, every picture I uploaded, every memory....it's in there!  {Well, not every one...I did delete some that weren't related to the family.}  And it was so easy!  I just selected the dates I wanted to include, unchecked the posts I didn't want in there, and it was done.  There are a couple little things, like when the title will end up on one page but the post really starts on the next, that aren't perfect, but it's so much easier than scrapbooking, and I got to include everything!  See...don't you want to start a blog now?

And if you're already a blogger and want to make your own book, they emailed me after ordering my book information about their Rewards program, so if you are interested, let me know and I'll send you a link.  Then I earn points toward my next purchase, which I will definitely be making soon!  I can't wait to order more books.

Thirteen Thursday

13 reasons I blog and love reading blogs...in no particular order.
  1. It's a place where I document our lives and capture all the memories I want to cherish forever.
  2. Blogging about my daily life will allow me to always remember my days as a stay-at-home-mom.
  3. This blog keeps our family 'in the loop' since we don't live close.
  4. Keeping my blog and reading my friends' lets me stay connected with all the friends I miss so much - I just wish more of them would blog.  :)
  5. I can express myself - I've always been a writer.  Journals, letters, etc.  This is my journal.
  6. It lets me share my experiences with other moms and get input about things we're going through.
  7. It gives me a place to share some info about my Tastefully Simple business with others.
  8. I like to swap recipe ideas with friends, family, and other bloggers.
  9. I've learned so much about parenting, activities to do with Gavin, and photography from other blogs I follow.
  10. I love leaving comments on other people's blogs and reading what comments are left on mine.
  11. It's my 'me time' most days.  I love starting the morning off checking my favorite blogs and updating mine if I have time.
  12. It's a lot quicker and less expensive than my previous scrapbooking obsession.  I still miss scrapbooking some days, but at least with my blog I can stay current.
  13. It's my little home on the internet.  :)

To Answer Your Questions

A while back, I asked my readers to comment and say hello.  I'm very curious about who is reading this since it gets so many hits.  I didn't get a great response from that post, which is fine....I'm just still curious!  :)  The last part of that post was for the readers to ask me questions.  I only got two, and I never answered them.

Danielle is one of my very great friends I met in the short time I was in NY.  She asked if we'd ever move back to NY.  Honestly, no...I can't see that happening.  But, I will say this - I loved NY more than I thought I ever would.  So much to do there and I met so many great people.  I miss you, Danielle, and the girls of Mommies Gone Wild every day!

Tori asked which I prefer - teaching or staying at home.  It's so easy for me to answer....STAYING HOME!  I have lived my life wanting to be a teacher, and I never thought I'd ever stay home.  I never wanted to!  But, when life dealt us cards we weren't expecting and I had this chance, I knew I wanted to do it.  I love spending my days with Gavin more than I can say in words.  Sure, we'd probably be less stressed about finances if I was working and we'd surely have better insurance, but I can't imagine going to work everyday now.  I know one day I will, and I'm dreading that day!

Changes

The blog's undergoing some changes!  I've been playing around with it the last couple of weeks, trying to make it look a little simpler.  My oh-so-creative sister helped me come up with a name change (ok, so really I texted her and asked her for some ideas and she came up with it...) and I figured out how to add a signature to the postings.  I'm still working on changing some other fonts, etc. so if you notice anything that looks way off on your computer, let me know.  I'm still learning all this design stuff and I don't want to screw anything up majorly.

Wishlist Wednesday

I'm stealing  borrowing my sister's idea. :)  But, instead of etsy items on my wishlist, I'm going to start keeping a list of things I wish I had that I could use for activities with Gavin.  As I've been adding more and more blogs to my blog list, I'm finding tons of great activities that I could do with him, if I had the right materials.  I decided I need to keep a list of them, because let's face it: my brain doesn't work the way it did pre-baby.  {You know how when you're pregnant people say you have 'baby brain' and that's it's ok that you forget things?  Well, it's not ok, because it never goes away...my baby is 27 months old!}  A ton of ideas I get I could definitely do if I had access to all my teaching stuff, but that's all stored in my parents' garage.  Mental note to self: try to look through that stuff over Thanksgiving.
  1. Bean bags - I saw a cute idea on I Can Teach My Child with a bean bag toss and can think of several ways to use the game, but I need bean bags.
  2. Magnifying glass - Gavin loves investigating things with his flashlight, I know he'd love to look at things with a magnifying glass.
  3. Feathers - the different sensory and craft ideas I could do....so exciting!
  4. A felt board - I've thought about making one of these....maybe I'll have to keep my eye out for a sale on bulletin boards and felt.  But, I could do so much with a felt board.
See - I already can't think of so many things I once wanted.  Good thing I started this list!
What are some things you use for crafts and educational activities for your toddler/preschooler?  I'd love to add to my list.  Add your ideas in the comment section!

A New Blog

Blogging has become very enjoyable for me, and I love the way it's documenting so much for us to look back on.  I highly recommend it!  :)

Because of that, I started another blog just for Gavin.  Check it out and 'follow me.'

Are you reading this?

Recently, Katie from When Hellos Means Goodbye did a post asking her readers to answer questions, and it got me thinking. There have been over 23,000 views of this blog. The map gadget I used to have has recorded views from California to Canada to the UK (had to remove the gadget because it didn't look right when I redesigned the blog). So, I'd love to know more about you! :) I know my family is reading this; they are one of the reasons I started doing this a 18 months ago. But, who are the rest of my readers?

So, I'd love for you to answer these questions in the comments section! It will be fun to see who my readers really are!  I'm not sure how many people will actually answer, but it's worth a try.

1. Where are you from? (You don't have to answer this specifically.)
2. Do you blog?
3. What are your favorite blogs to follow? I love to find new ones to read!
4. What's your favorite book?
5. Do you have any questions for me?

Craft Time with Mommy

Painting with Peppers! Last week, after cutting a pepper for dinner, I remembered a craft I'd seen on Little Learners Lounge and decided to let Gavin have a try at stamping with peppers to keep him occupied until dinner was ready. He LOVED it!

Then, for some reason, he decided to put him hands in the paint. Now, this is the child that I cannot get to fingerpaint because he doesn't like his hands messy. And the child that I practically had to wrestle down to get a handprint for Father's Day gifts. But all of a sudden, he was ready to get his hands dirty!

And, again, he LOVED it!

Some things to check out

I haven't been taking many new pictures lately - it's been pretty rainy here and we really haven't been doing much! So instead of Gavin pictures, I'm just going to write about something I think you should check out. :)

I found a new blog that I like to read and decided to try a recipe that I saw rave reviews for. Go to http://shaversfamily.blogspot.com/2009/12/recipe-crockpot-shredded-bbq-chicken.html and try these sandwiches! They were so easy to make and so delicious! We used 4 chicken breasts and had enough for dinner and lunch on two different days. Gavin even ate this....it was yummy!

I've been introduced to Money Saving Mom and Hip2Save blogs and the joys of couponing. I've always used coupons, but never saved a ton of money. These ladies are wonderful and do all the ad searching for you; they tell you where to buy things on sale and which coupon to use. It's been fun (for me...remember, I'm a dork) to check the site each day or two, make my list, and head off to get deals. You can't pass up paying $0.42 for BBQ sauce or $0.60 for dish soap! :)

And lastly, if you have a picky eater and want some inspiration, check out www.babyjustinwhite.blogspot.com. She just started this part of her blog, but Melanie has great ideas for sneaking healthy foods into your toddler's diet. Things we probably could all think of but don't.... :)

Dino-mite!

We finished up Dinosaur week here at our house. The green stegosaurus I posted the beginning picture of turned out cute, but it looks more like a porcupine to me. :) We worked on another stegosaurus the next day. I traced Gavin's hand and made 3 handprints on one paper and drew the outline of a dinosaur on the next. Then, I let Gavin paint it using a dishwashing brush. I thought it was creative....giving him another tool to use to paint.
He disagreed - he cried and kept saying, 'No brush!' so I eventually gave in and let him have regular paintbrushes. (Apparently he just didn't like that brush because he painted over the weekend with q-tips just fine!)
This is what the two pages looked like....then I cut out the dinosaur and the handprints and glued them to make the stegosaurus! I love how it turned out. :)

Again, I can't take credit for these ideas....I got them from Little Learners Lounge and No Time for Flashcards. I also found a small pack of dinosaurs at the dollar store that we used. He made footprints in playdough with them and we sorted them by color. After the week, he now knows the following dinosaurs: Stegosaurus (he says "saurus spikes"), T-Rex, Triceratops (he calls it "tops") and Teranadon (which he learned from Dinosaur Train on PBS. He's so smart! :)

Craft Time with Mommy

A few months back, I started following a blog that you have to check out if you have little ones at home. www.littlelearnerslounge.blogspot.com This mom does an amazing job coming up with units for her little girl and shares them on her blog. Of course, about the time I found it was when we were packing up in NY so I didn't feel like I could do anything with Gavin. Since geting settled, we've jumped into weekly units and I get many of my ideas from her. So far we've learned about farms, transportation, and dinosaurs. Here are some pictures from our crafts!

Making our sheep!
Muddy pig time! We painted it with chocolate pudding - which Shirley then ate...

Learning about transportation - here's our stop light.

Painting with cars!

Dinosaurs - this turned out to be a stegosaurus. More pictures to come soon. :)

Wow! 15,000 views of Our Journey :) So cool! Thanks for being so involved in our lives!

Whose blog is that, anyway?

It's been on my blog list for just a few days, but people are already asking, so I thought I'd explain. Earlier this week, I added a blog to my page. Keeping Up With the Joneses. Last week, I was searching for some info on North Carolina for Jarrod, and somehow stumbled across this blog. I started reading, just because I love blogging and love reading other people's stories. Well, little did I know how sad it would be and how I wouldn't be able to stop. Believe me, if you don't want to cry, don't read it! Ayden was just 4 months old when he lost his life, and I think the reason I couldn't stop reading was that it reminded me so much of Gavin. He, too, was born at the end of April, but a year after Gavin. His mom is a teacher. Ayden learned to roll over right around the time he turned 4 months, just like Gavin. When I read it, I find it unbelievable how strong his parents must be. I don't know her, but I feel such compassion for her. It makes me realize how precious Gavin is. It puts things into perspective. I thought leaving my family and moving to a new state would be the worst thing ever. I thought leaving my friends would be the worst thing ever. I thought quitting my teaching job that I loved would be the worst thing ever. Nope...I was wrong. The Jones family has experienced the worst thing ever. Not me.

New site to visit

Check it out...
www.toddlertreatsandmore.blogspot.com
I'm not sure how I came across it, but this site has some cool recipes I'm going to try with Gavin.
